Is 4x4 enough?
For monograms, patches, baby clothes and tea towels, yes. The SE700 embroiders up to 4 x 4 inches (100 x 100 mm). If you know you want larger designs, such as towels or jacket backs, the PE900 and SE2000 both have a 5x7 hoop.
Can a beginner use the Brother SE700?
Yes. Amazon's own review summary says customers find it excellent for beginners, and the machine has an LCD screen that shows directions. Our review article covers what first-timers should know.
Do I need software?
No, you can begin without any. The SE700 has 135 built-in designs and 10 fonts, and the free Artspira app sends designs wirelessly. If you later want to turn a photo into an embroidery design, Brother offers Artspira+, a paid plan. Check Brother's current plan comparison at https://www.brother-usa.com/apps/sewing-embroidery/artspira/artspira-faqs/artspira-plus.
Does it sew as well as embroider?
Yes. It has 103 sewing stitches, 10 buttonhole styles and 8 presser feet in the box, so one machine covers both.
